Common Questions
What should I do to prepare for my first class?
Just a few simple things before you hit the mats!
- Trim your fingernails and toenails.
- Bring a water bottle.
- Wear comfortable gym clothes without zips or jewellery.
- Remove shoes before stepping onto the mats.
Do I need to book before coming in?
We recommend sending us a message before your first visit. We’ll help you choose a suitable class, explain what to expect and make sure you know where to go.
Do you have spare Gis I can borrow?
Yes! We have spare Gis available for beginners to borrow, so there’s no need to buy one before your first class. Just let us know beforehand so we can arrange one for you.
Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu safe?
Like any contact sport, jiu jitsu comes with some risk of injury. We focus on controlled training, good technique and looking after our training partners. You’ll also learn when and how to tap, which is an important part of keeping everyone safe.
Am I too old to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Not at all! You’re never too old to give jiu jitsu a go. We welcome people of all ages, fitness levels and experience. Our coaches will help you learn at your own pace in a friendly, supportive environment. Whether you’re 20, 40 or 60+, there’s a place for you on the mats!
Will I have to spar (roll) in my first class?
Not unless you’re comfortable! There’s no pressure to spar straight away. You can focus on learning the techniques, getting familiar with the movements and building confidence before giving it a go.
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
Gi classes involve training in a traditional jiu jitsu uniform, where you can grip your opponent’s jacket and pants. No-Gi is practised in athletic clothing and focuses more on body control and grips. Both are great options for beginners.
Do you offer classes for children?
Yes, we have dedicated kids’ classes for ages 6–12. Our classes focus on building confidence, coordination, discipline and teamwork in a friendly, supportive environment.
